Why do the devotees chant along the streets? nama-sankirtanam yasya sarva-papa-pranasanam pranamo duhkha-samamanas tam namami harim param S.Bhagavatam 12:13:23 I offer my dandavat pranams [respectful obeisances] unto the Supreme Lord, Sri Hari; the congregational chanting of whose holy names destroys all sinful reactions, and offering of dandavat pranams eliminates all material suffering. The Harinam Sankirtan [chanting of holynames along the streets] was introduced by Lord Krishna in His form of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu who advented Himself in Mayapur [1487-1535] and propagated the holynames throughout India and prophesized that the holynames will reach every nook and corner of this world.His Divine Grace A.C Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada with His vigorous preaching realised that prophecy within only ten years [1966-1976].And now this is being continued by whom he always considered his dearmost son,His Divine Grace Srila Bhakti Sundara Govinda Deva Goswami Maharaj, who is the disciple of whom Srila A.C Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada regarded as his Siksa Guru - His Divine Grace Srila Bhakti Raksaka Sridhara Deva Goswami Maharaj. Let us see what Harinaam [chanting of holy names] can do for you. First the chanting of the holy names will relieve you from all forms of sinful activities. It's only the sinful reactions that bring all sorts of suffering unto us. But the chanting of holy names strikes at the root of the sin and will remove it completely and you'll become a dharmatma,a gentleman filled with all pure and perfect characteristics glorified by all including the demigods, just as in the case of Pralada Maharaj. All forms of miseries will desert you because the Lord sitting in your heart will not only chase away all miseries but fill you with eternal bliss, that you'll relish at every step of your life.Human beings should live in happiness, not in distress. Having deviated from the original path shown by Sri Krishna in all sacred books, human beings have been trapped in a web of difficulties. However the most gracious, Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, came to relieve us from all miseries and plunge us in an ocean of bliss. Try for yourself, start chanting the holy names: say ten minutes every day hare krishna hare krishna krishna krishna hare hare hare rama hare rama rama rama hare hare and you'll see the result. Make it a habit to chant whether you are eating, drinking, walking along the road, working in the garden or office,[specially when you are racking your brains in time of difficulty,relax and chant , you'll have the solution] or even when going to sleep, you'll observe how you are changing for the better and if continued with sincerity, all perfections will be acheived.
